ROBY Lakatos is a world-renowned Hungarian violin virtuoso, directly descended from the legendary 19th-century violinist-composer János Bihari. With his groundbreaking talent – and early professional support from Yehudi Menuhin – Lakatos has performed on many of the world’s greatest stages, from Carnegie Hall and the Vatican to London’s Royal Albert Hall. His musical greatness has been recognized with numerous international honors, including being named an Honorary Citizen of Mexico and receiving a major music award from the Spanish Ministry of Culture in 2021.

Lakatos’s singular musical vision gave rise to the “unorthodox Gypsy fusion” genre, which revitalizes Hungarian Gypsy music by fusing it with classical, jazz, Balkan, and klezmer traditions. He is also celebrated for his cross-genre collaborations, having shared the stage with legendary artists such as Maxim Vengerov, Vadim Repin, Stéphane Grappelli, and Randy Brecker. Lakatos’s success remains unbroken, and through his music, he continues to bring Hungarian culture to audiences worldwide. Ever the patriot, at each of his major concerts around the globe, he makes a point of identifying himself as a Hungarian violinist.

«While Lakatos won first prize for classical violin at the Béla Bartók Conservatory of Budapest in 1984, he has for many years been best known as an artful and seemingly effortless blender of Hungarian and Romani folk music, jazz, klezmer and other living and historic vernacular traditions.«

«What separates the Lakatos ensemble is the sterling fire they bring to even the most lambent moments. But in the end, no electricity is needed where already there is so much heat.»
